Straight ahead on your Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update, HAFTR JV Basketball surges past HANC, Flatbush and Rambam hockey squads duke it out in two Overtime affairs and our boys bring home the gold. Good Morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
With only 10 games on the JV Basketball season, and only one contest against each opponent, every win is crucial for some sort of implication, and for the HANC Hurricanes and HAFTR Hawks, neither could afford to drop last week’s matchup in the battle for a first-round bye in the Eastern Conference playoff race. At that point, the Hawks were 7-1, in sole possession of 2nd place while HANC was only 1 behind them in the loss column at 4-2. A HAFTR loss, and HANC could find themselves battling for the coveted 2-seed. Throughout the first half, HANC was clearly the more motivated squad. The Hurricanes held a big lead, up 15 points, but the Hawks would battle back and take the lead 2 minutes into the 4th quarter. The score would seesaw and with HAFTR up one with under 30 seconds to go, two Harrison Kuritzky free-throws would up the lead to 3. HANC would have one last possession as the clock wound down and with 5.5 seconds left, a HANC inbounds from mid-court found its way to Michael Tsor who put up a ridiculous step-back running 3 to tie the game and send it to Overtime. In the OT session it was a 2 point game with 40 seconds left, when a Simon Perlow block preserved the game for the Hawks. Two Kuritzky free throws would ice the game and HAFTR would survive to stay in the hunt for the division.
Other key JV basketball scores, Magen David edges Derech Hatorah 62-61 to stay at only 1 loss, DRS stays undefeated, dropping YDE 45-32 and JEC continues their impressive season topping Maor 55-51.
It’s a rare feat for two schools to find themselves in two overtime games in one night, but for the Rambam and Flatbush JV and Varsity hockey squads, last Wednesday night saw exactly that. In the JV portion of the evening, Rambam went up 1-0 early on a goal by Benny Csillag, but let the lead slip away with under 2 minutes to go in regulation with a Murry Dweck tally for the Falcons. In the overtime session, Dweck would find the back of the net again, giving Flatbush the victory and helping move themselves into first place in the JV Central. In the 2nd game of the evening, Flatbush battled back from 1-0 and 3-1 deficits in the first and second period respectively to force the extra session, but not without a little drama. The Falcons would earn a double-minor powerplay with 6 seconds left in regulation, meaning 3 solid minutes of 3 on 2 hockey in overtime in favor of Flatbush. Rambam, however, on the penalty killing of Harry Tanen and Noah Schwartz, along with goalie Charlie Altman were able to stave off the Falcons for the full 3 minutes and 30 seconds later, Tanen, threaded a backhand pass from midcourt down low to Avi Orlow who put the game away with his third goal of the game to give the Ravens the 4-3 overtime victory, clinching a playoff berth in the process. Ironically, for the Ravens, as rare as this feat seemed, this was actually the second time in a week that both teams found themselves in an extra session, with both having also played overtime games against HAFTR’s JV and Varsity squads the Wednesday prior.
Finally, congratulations to both the Junior Boys and Youth Mens Basketball squads at the Pan-American Maccabi games. As mentioned last week, the two teams comprised mostly of the Yeshiva League’s top talent represented the United States down in Chile. Both teams went undefeated taking home the Gold Medal. For the Youth squad, the 18 and Under team, a 68-32 romp of Argentina behind Gabriel Leifer’s 19 points and Abie Perlow’s 13 took home the top prize, while the 16 and Under squad demolished Mexico 59-35.
