Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, ” bagels” on the board in Varsity Hockey, Three teams clinch playoff berths in JV and Ramaz and MTA basketball split the battle for Northern Manhattan. Good Morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Long-standing city rivals, Ramaz and MTA squared off this past week in JV and Varsity basketball action in The Heights on Motzai Shabbos. The JV game would kick off the action and set the tone for the evening’s affairs. A Tight one- point game at the half, MTA seemed to have taken control, with a 10 point lead after 3, having outscored Ramaz 16-7. But Ramaz hit fire in the 4th, scoring 21 points. Unfortunately for them, they could not hold MTA off the board enough to complete the comeback, with the Lions earning the 3 point win 52-49. Eitan Pfeiffer led MTA , while the game high went to Ramaz’s Emanuel Dicker who scored 14.
In the varsity game that followed, however, the Rams were able to do what their JV counterparts could not close out. MTA led by 9 at the half, but a 25 point second half, including 9 by Ramaz’ Ben Rabinowitz in the 4th to tie up the game at 41 to head to OT. Sam Reich, Yoni Bettinger and Johnny Povman combined to outscore the Lions 9-1 in the extra session for their 3rd win of the season, 50-42. Povman scored 16 on the night to lead Ramaz. Binyamin Buchbinder led the Lions and the game with 20 in the loss.
In other JV action on the week, TABC defeated Heschel 51-32 and YDE defeats Shaare Torah 49-37.
On the varsity end, DRS stays undefeated knocking off HANC and holding off Frisch in Overtime this past Sunday, while North Shore upsets SAR 33-30 at home, in a role reversal of last year’s upset by SAR in SAR.
Over to Hockey now where the varsity board saw 7 shutouts in 12 games last week. Magen David, Rambam, TABC and Frisch each recorded one, while HAFTR earned two. SAR also posted one continuing their hot streak, beating Eastern foe DRS 3-0 in Woodmere, Junior Solomon Freilich scored 2 goals in the victory, Senior josh Rosenberg added one.
In JV Hockey, three teams have clinched playoff berths. JEC clinched by virtue of their win over YDE while Frisch has locked in a postseason berth with a 3-0 defeat of Rambam last night. DRS is the third clincher, despite not having a game on the week. HAFTR, HANC, Flatbush and TABC can all lock up spots over the next two weeks.
Finally, congratulations to the Frisch Cougars JV Basketball team, winners of the 2015 Emunah Rubenstein Basketball Tournament.
