With Chanukah over, gyms all across New York will most definitely be packed. No, we aren’t talking about your local New York Sports Club, but rather the many gyms across the Yeshiva League as the season hits that important third quarter stretch on the road to the not-to-distant postseason. On this edition of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports update, HAFTR varsity hockey gets buzzed from the ranks of the undefeated, New Jersey gears up for Varsity Basketball’s version of the “Route 4 Rivalry” and the massive 2015 Emunah Rubenstein JV Basketball Tournament kicks off. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity hockey saw its undefeated number trimmed this week as Eastern Division leading HAFTR, formerly 8-0, fell to SAR this past week in Riverdale, 2-1. SAR took the lead out of the gate with Senior Sam Soff scoring in the opening minutes to give the home team the 1-0 lead. Score would stay the same into the third. Opening minute of the period, Eli Best called for a penalty put the Hawks on the powerplay. 10 seconds later, Junior Daniel Lichter tied the game at 1. The game would only be tied for one minute. Delayed penalty to HAFTR, SAR controlling in the offensive zone, Sophomore Shua Friedman along the boards throws the ball to the middle where it hits off of Junior Joey Mogilner’s foot and deflects into the net for a 2-1 final tally. The HAFTR loss now means that TABC stands as the lone undefeated team in the Yeshiva Hockey League. A status that SAR will have a chance to test this coming Sunday when they square off with the Storm in Teaneck.
Other scores on the week, MTA upends HANC 4-2 and Ramaz rams Flatbush 4-1
Speaking of this coming Sunday, hockey isn’t the only action happening at TABC. Following the hockey double-header between TABC and SAR, the Storm will host the Frisch Cougars in the first meeting of the 2015 Route 4 Basketball rivalry. Over the last 3 years, these two teams have been thorns in each other’s sides and this year will be no different. With both teams hovering around the .500 mark, this game will have a little more juice to it as a loss will widen the gap between the losing side and the top of the division where undefeated Heschel and 7-win JEC are perched overlooking the field.
In other action, Flatbush continues to roll, picking up their 4th win in 10 days to go from below .500 to being 1 game out of 2nd place in the East, defeating Shaare Torah and HANC this week.
Finally, JV Basketball will feature its showcase event of the year this week, the 2015 Emunah/ Rubenstein Invitational Basketball tournament. Twelve JV teams, including one from Israel will participate in games over the next six days in a fascinatingly structured event. Games will take place in gyms all across the Yeshiva League, starting with tonight’s action in HANC and JEC and leading up to this Sunday’s Six-game spectacular final day at SAR starting at noon. For more information on this event tune in to the Court Report tonight on the Nachum Segal Network. On this week’s episode, I interview JEC Varsity Basketball Coach and Tournament Director of the Emunah/Rubenstein basketball tournament Avi Borenstein about this year’s event and the amazing causes that it benefits. All that and more, tonight at 7 PM only on the Nachum Segal Network, Nachumsegal.com
