Straight ahead on your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Flatbush Varsity Hockey surprises DRS, Hillel varsity basketball continues their hot start and JEC JV Hockey takes out the defending champs. All that a more coming right up, Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
In a game featuring two teams trending in opposite directions, DRS and Flatbush met up in a varsity hockey showdown last Tuesday night in Brooklyn in Flatbush’s new Auxiliary rink. Both teams were hungry for a win, each having lost their previous game, both against HAFTR. For Flatbush, it was their only blemish on the season, for DRS, it meant a drop to a 2-2 record. No score through the first, but midway through the second, the Wildcats struck first on a goal by Senior Eitan Aryeh. A minute later, the Wildcats would get another opportunity as Flatbush would take a penalty, giving DRS the man-advantage. The advantage would work against them, however, as an errant pass in their own zone led to a turnover and a shorthanded equalizer by Flatbush’s Sam Laniado. The positive for DRS, they still had the powerplay. Forty seconds later, the Wildcats had the lead once again as Aryeh put in his second goal on a 2 on 1 with Isaac Fries. Turnabout is fair play though. With 14 seconds left in the second period, Flatbush on the powerplay, Laniado would add his second to tie the game at 2 going into the third.
The third was an intense period with both goalies, Aaron Kubie for Flatbush and Gabriel Miller for DRS standing tall in net and Overtime was assuredly on the horizon. But, fate would have other plans. With 1:24 remaining in the period, Junior Elliot Stein threw the ball to the net. Miller attempted to gather the ball in only to have it roll up and over his glove and into the DRS net giving Flatbush the 3-2 lead and the win. The Flatbush victory puts them at 6-1 and keeps them rolling near the top of the division. The DRS loss puts them in uncharted territory, dropping them below .500 for the first time in a very long time. The skid would continue for DRS as they also dropped last night’s contest to Rambam 3-1.
Other scores on the week, TABC blanks SAR 4-0 and Ramaz drops MTA 4-1.
In JV Hockey, another titan takes a fall. Defending champion SAR finds themselves on the ropes after dropping a 6-2 contest to Central division leader JEC at home. Sophomore Elisha Shmutter scored 4 goals to lead the Thunder to the win. Sophomore Aryeh Marcus recorded three assists to help JEC stay undefeated.
Moving over to varsity basketball, if you can’t take the Heat, get away from the top of the Western Conference standings board. A few weeks ago, we mentioned the exploits of the only undefeated team left in the West, the Heschel Heat, but this week their feiry counterparts, Hillel, threw themselves into the mix, defeating TABC 67-57. The win gives Heschel a 4-2 record, with both of its losses coming in close overtime contests.
Also on the week, Flatbush downs Brooklyn-rival Magen David 55-39 and Frisch bounces back from a 1 point loss to HAFTR with a 9 point win over MTA.
