Thank you Nachum,
Welcome back from vacation everyone! Good morning and welcome to the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. I’m Elliot Weiselberg and here’s what’s happening around the Yeshiva League.
Although the majority of the Metropolitan League Schools were on break over the last 2 weeks, there were a few schools that managed to keep busy, namely SAR. The Riverdale school was featured in 10 of the 11 boys and girls games played since January 12th and managed a 5-5 split over that stretch. Of the 5 wins, 2 were by the JV basketball team, defeating Heschel and Ramaz to remain perfect at 9-0 and clinch the NYC division crown and a split in JV hockey, defeating Ramaz but falling to Frisch in that span. The more notable stories, however, come from the losses. In varsity basketball, the Sting fell on a last second shot by Ramaz’s Jamie Cappell to cap off a Ramaz comeback, stealing a much needed victory away with a dagger 3-pointer for a 45-44 win. Also, SAR Varsity hockey dropped two to Frisch, 5-3 and Ramaz 4-2 to put themselves in a do-or-die situation this coming week against MTA.
As everyone comes back, the weeks ahead will feature many games of importance in all leagues. Here are the playoff updates for the leagues as they stand.
In JV Basketball, in the East, DRS and Flatbush have locked up the Long Island and Brooklyn division crowns. Also joining them are HANC and YDE in each of those divisions, respectively. Each division also has 3 teams fighting for the remaining two divisional spots, with HAFTR, Rambam and North Shore battling in the LI division, and Shaare Torah, Or Hatorah and Magen David in the Brooklyn division. Out West, joining SAR from the NYC division is Heschel and either Ramaz or MTA. In the NJ division, Frisch and TABC have locked down berths and will be joined by wither JEC or Hillel. In the East, 4 teams make it from each division, while in the West, only 3 teams make it from each division.
Over in Varsity Basketball, North Shore and Ramaz have clinched the East and West division titles. In the East, HAFTR has locked up the 2 seed, while 6 teams fight for seeds 3-6. Out West, Heschel, SAR, TABC and Frisch have clinched berths but where they finish is still up for grabs. Fighting for the final spot are Kushner, MTA and Hillel.
In JV Hockey, the West entrants are all wrapped up with Frisch, TABC, SAR and Kushner. In the East, DRS, Rambam and HAFTR will go down to the wire fighting for seeds 1-3. The only uncertainty is still that 4th spot where Flatbush currently holds the position, but can be overtaken should North Shore win their remaining 3 games.
Finally in varsity hockey, both the East and the West will go down to the last day to determine the final entrants. In the East, HAFTR and DRS have wrapped up byes, Flatbush will host a first round game, Rambam is set to join them, and Magen David, HANC and North Shore will all do battle for the last 2 spots. Magen David currently holds the 5th spot but will need to hope for some miracle losses by HANC and North Shore down the stretch. Over in the West, the most compelling story has become the bottom of the division. Frisch , TABC and Ramaz have clinched spots and Kushner is close behind. The last spot as we said before will come down to the MTA-SAR battle this coming week, MTA is currently one point behind the Sting and can catapult over them in the standings and into the playoffs with a victory.
