Thank you Nachum,
Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg and this is the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. In an interesting weekend of twists and turns, the varsity hockey league says goodbye to its last undefeated team, JV basketball shows a bit of “faith”, and in JV Hockey, Monday night was, for the birds.
But first, we’ll start off with varsity basketball. The North Shore Stars picked up 2 huge wins on the week, defeating YDE 68-43 on Monday and Flatbush 57-41 on Thursday, The wn places them at 11-0, meaning that they have clinched a playoff berth in the East, and for the third season in a row, will also enjoy a first-round bye. Junior Cody Cohen had a huge night against YDE, amassing 27 points for the Stars. Also clinching a playoff berth was Ramaz. The Rams took two games on the week as well, downing Frisch 51-42 and TABC 54-46.
Other scores of note, Derech Hatorah gets a win, defeating HANC 64-58. YDH charged out the gates scoring the game’s first 22 points, all from Steven Rosenfeld and Yosef Mekible
Moving over to varsity hockey, the Eastern division saw its top 4 teams doing battle over the last 48 hours. Sunday marked the fall of the last undefeated team, as the Flatbush Falcons upset the DRS Wildcats 2-1 in Brooklyn. Senior Morris Bijou scored twice for Flatbush in the victory. Senior Stephen Esses held strong in net, allowing only a 5 on 3 goal with 9 seconds left to propel Flatbush to their 9th win in 13 games on the season. In the other game involving top East teams, HAFTR wraps up a playoff spot, last night, crushing Rambam 7-2. Flatbush and HAFTR will meet this Thursday night.
Other scores of note in the varsity hockey league, SAR avenges their early season loss to JEC defeating the Thunder 5-0 at home and MTA and Ramaz play to yet another 1-1 tie.
Speaking of HAFTR and Rambam, the JV teams met up last night with markedly different results than the varsity. The Ravens dominated the Hawks 6-1 on a hat-trick performance from Sophomore offensman Daniel Kurman. Freshman Harry Tanen added two for Rambam. Zack Kramer netted the lone goal for the Hawks.
Out in the West, Frisch remains the last unbeaten time in the hockey league at 6-0 after downing Kushner, 3-1.
Finally, JV Basketball had its annual Emunah Rubenstein tournament this weekend. The finals, held in SAR found NJ division rivals Frisch and TABC matching up prior to their two regular season games this year. Sophomores Andrew Langer and Tai Gerzberg put on a show, putting up 16 points each for Frisch and TABC respectively. However, the Cougars found other sources in the games waning minutes to put the Storm away 44-39. Langer, for his efforts was awarded tournament MVP, averaging 20 points per game which included a 41 point effort over Heschel in the tournaments early stages.
In regular season action, YDE defeats Shaare Torah 46-44 last night. The win now gives 2nd place YDE a two game cushion on third place Shaare with only 3 games to play for each team in the Brooklyn division.
