Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg and this is the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. Snow postpones several games in all 4 leagues, but the action that did happen certainly made things just a little bit more interesting as we roll full speed ahead towards the turn of the calendar year.
We’ll start off with varsity basketball. Last Tuesday night’s much-hyped contest between HAFTR and North Shore was pushed off due to the inclement weather, but that didn’t stop the other marquee matchup of the week, the rematch of Heschel and TABC. If you remember, earlier this year, Heschel fresh off of its pre-season Magen David Tournament victory fell to the Storm 55-38 to begin the regular season. The two met up again on Wednesday night with, ironically, Heschel coming off of another tournament victory, this time the Weiner tournament in Baltimore last weekend. A two-point game at the half, Heschel went on a tear, outscoring TABC 14-5 in the 3rd quarter to open up a 34-23 lead entering the 4th and never lead by less than 14 the rest of the way, with the final score being the Heat 53 and the Storm 39 despite a monster game by TABC big-man Senior Yehoshua Zirman who scored 21 on the night. Senior Kenny Storch led Heschel with 15.
Other scores of note on the week, Ramaz and Kushner combine for 132 points in Ramaz’s 71-61 victory. Matt Stadtmauer scored 29, tying him for the 4th highest points in a single-game on the year and HAFTR defeated Flatbush last night.
In JV Basketball, games were sparse because of the weather, but Flatbush and SAR stayed perfect defeating Lev Bonim and MTA respectively. SAR has clinched a playoff and Flatbush can do the same this week with some help from their friends in the Brooklyn division as they are idle over the next few days.
Moving over to varsity hockey, where just like in varsity basketball, a West team was able to avenge an early season loss in convincing fashion. SAR and JEC started off the varsity hockey season with JEC stunning the Sting. The Sting would return the favor last night, thrashing the Thunder 5-0 in Riverdale, with all 5 goals coming in the third, the backbreaker being a Jesse Schanzer powerplay goal to put SAR up 2-0 a few minutes into the final session.
Other scores of note, HAFTR bounces back from their loss to DRS with a convincing 4-0 victory over TABC, goals by seniors Ari Baratz, Mark Spivak, Adam Schreiber and Steven Zaslowsky and a shutout by Senior netminder Joseph Kestanbaum helped HAFTR bounce back after its first loss of the season. Also Flatbush takes two on the week by identical 5-0 scores. Senior Moe Maleh scores 4 goals for the Falcons over the two game span. Freshman Sam Laniado added 3.
Finally, over in JV hockey, Rambam defeated North Shore last night 8-2. With the win, Rambam clinches a playoff berth. Additionally, HAFTR and DRS punch post-season tickets as a result of the North Shore loss. Flatbush can clinch the final playoff spot in the East by gaining a point tomorrow night against DRS in the Greenhouse.
