Thank you Nachum,
Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg and this is the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. The last JM in the AM Sports Update for the 2013 calendar year. Up Ahead, DRS’s slide continues in varsity hockey, while HAFTR quadruples up. TABC gains control of the JV Hockey world, A duo of Brooklyn games highlight last night’s JV Basketball action, and a controversial last-second play could seal MTA varsity basketball’s playoff fate.
We start off in JV Basketball where Brooklyn took center stage last night and the number 51 was on display as the winners of both hit the mark on the scoreboard. Division leader Flatbush is now the Brooklyn Division champs after taking out 2nd place YDE 51-25. Flatbush improves to 9-0 while YDE drop to 5-3, only two wins ahead of Ohr Hatorah and Shaare who are both at 3-5 after Ohr Hatorah knocked off the Stars 51-47. Both teams are now tied for the third and fourth spots in the division and are in control of their playoff destinies.
Other scores on the week, DRS wins the Long Island division, topping HANC 47-22 and Frisch stays perfect out West, dropping JEC 54-42
Over in JV Hockey, Frisch and TABC, the top two teams in the West squared off Thursday. FRISCH JUMPED OUT TO AN EARLY 1-0 LEAD ON A GOAL BY FRESHMAN YEHUDA BRINN. TABC WOULD COUNTER BEFORE THE END OF THE PERIOD ON A POWER-PLAY MARKER BY SOPHOMORE SHUA NAOR. IN THE SECOND FRISCH ONCE AGAIN TOOK THE LEAD THANKS TO SOPHOMORE JORDAN SOCLOFF, ONLY TO SEE TABC’S YAIR KNOLLER KNOT THE GAME UP AT 2. THE SEE-SAW WOULD END THERE AS TABC would count off 4 straight goals including the go-ahead goal by Daniel Levy with 3 seconds left in the 2nd period. TABC wins by a final of 6-2. TABC, NOW AT 5-1, CLINCHES A PLAYOFF BERTH AND TAKES CONTROL OF THE WESTERN CONFERENCE.
Other action,
TABC also takes out Kushner 4-0
HAFTR rebounds from their loss to Rambam clobbering Flatbush 7-1 and HANC tops Magen David in Overtime.
Moving on to varsity action, TABC kept DRS’s slide going on Motzai Shabbos downing the Wildcats 3-1. The Storm jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Yosef Naor and Alex Malech. Moshe Genuth would cut the lead in half midway through the second with a Powerplay goal for DRS but Aryeh Berman put the game away for the Storm, scoring a powerplay goal of his own late in the same period. DRS is now feeling the heat as HAFTR has pulled even with the wildcats after going 4-0 in the last week, topping Rambam, MTA, Flatbush and Magen David.
Other scores
Frisch took control of the West defeating TABC two days prior to the DRS game 3-1 and MTA topped Kushner 4-1.
Speaking of MTA, the Lions and Storm did varsity basketball battle yesterday, with TABC pulling out a 45-44 controversial victory. Yehoshua Zirman scored 27 for TABC in the victory, but none will be talked about more than the last two. TABC down one with under 5 seconds to go, Dan Poleyeff let loose a long floater that missed the mark, but was pulled down by Zirman and put back up for the game-winning basketball, although it appeared that the ball was still in Zirman’s hands after the buzzer had gone off. The referees however, determined that the shot would count, giving TABC the victory and dealing a blow to MTA’s playoff hopes. The Lions are now 3-6, a win behing Kushner for the final playoff spot in the West.
