Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, DRS JV hockey remain undefeated against top divisional rivals, Heschel basketball notches another big win under their belt on the young season and only a week removed from Cooper, a role reversal involving Flatbush and HAFTR! Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity basketball saw an upset this past week as the Flatbush Falcons soared past the HAFTR Hawks 60-50 in Flatbush on Thursday night. Rewind to five days prior, where HAFTR found itself in a 2nd place finish in the Cooper Memphis National Invitational Tournament, while Flatbush, going 1-3 at the same event finished in last place in the top tier. The way this game opened up, it looked as if those results would be true to form as the Hawks had rung up a 14 point lead mid-way through the second. But once again, as we’ve seen this season, even double-digit leads are not safe anymore. The Falcons were able to chip away at the deficit and go into the locker room down only 9, 31-22 at the half. A nine point margin, however, is still a nine point margin, and for the Falcons, there needed to be a hero and it came in the form of Junior Kevin Haddad. Haddad dropped 13 of his game high 20 points in the 3rd quarter, helping to trim HAFTR’s lead to 1 going into the final stanza. In the 4th, it was two seniors who took over the game as Elliot Beyda and Jake Shalom put up 13 points of their own to take the lead for good and the 10 point victory. With the win, Flatbush evens their record at 2-2, while HAFTR drops their first loss in Yeshiva League play.
Across the river, another upset rocked the basketball landscape last Sunday as the Heschel Heat picked up their 3rd win of the season, this time knocking off the TABC Storm! Only a few days following their victory over Frisch, the Heat hosted the Storm and for the first half of play, it looked to be an even ball game, with the host Heat up 5 at the half, but the third quarter was all Heschel, outscoring TABC 23-4 in the period en route to a 67-46 victory, giving them their second win over a highly-touted opponent in the past two weeks. The Brandeis brothers, Ben and Aaron, combined for 36 of Heschel’s 67 points in the win. Ironically, these two teams will meet up again this Thursday in the Inaugural Shalhevet Tournament happening this weekend in California.
Moving over to hockey, DRS JV continues their undefeated season, knocking off HANC 2-1 last week. Both teams came into the game undefeated in regulation, but the Wildcats behind 2 goals from Yosef Adler and stellar goaltending by Jakey Friedman were able to outlast the Hurricanes, despite equally stellar play in net from Aeton Rabanipour, Friedman’s former Har Torah protégé. DRS improves to 3-0, while HANC drops to 3-1-1.
And, because it wouldn’t be appropriate to not have Miriam shep some nachas, the junior high HAFTR Hawks defeated the HANC Hurricanes, last night, 1-0.
