Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, DRS hammers HAFTR in Doubleheader basketball action, and an overtime thriller in the city in Varsity hockey.Happy Channukah everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Just about a month after meeting up in the finals of the Cooper Memphis Invitational Basketball tournament, the DRS Wildcats and the HAFTR Hawks met in Yeshiva League Season-play. This, the first of two meetings would feature a JV- Varsity Doubleheader. In the matinee game of the evening, the two undefeated JV teams would square off. Both teams came into the game at 5-0 looking to gain the edge in what will be their only game this year, making this contest even more important as both are expected to be making a run for the division title down the stretch. DRS jumped out to an early lead, up 15-8 after the first and an 11 point lead at the half. The Hawks would battle back in the third, cutting the deficit to 4, but could not get any further leaving DRS as the only remaining undefeated team in the East, at 6-0.
In other action, SAR went 3-0 on the week, downing Kushner, TABC and JEC.
The varsity contest would start in intriguing fashion with DRS taking an early 9-5 lead before 5 Jason Mishkin points would put the Hawks up 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. That point in the game would be the only lead the Hawks would hold as DRS would go on a 10-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter keeping HAFTR without a point until the final minute of the half. The Wildcats would take a 14 point lead into the locker room, but unlike in Memphis where HAFTR roared back from 18 down to make the game close, DRS slammed the door shut, taking multiple 20+ point leads en route to a 48-23 win, upping their record to a perfect 9-0 and clinching the first playoff berth of any team in any league for the 2015-2016 season.
Other varsity basketball scores, Rambam drops HANC 45-40 in overtime and Frisch doubles up on Ramaz 70-35.
In varsity hockey, JEC has gotten people talking this season about a possible playoff push, going 3-2-0-1 on the young season. Last week they met up with one of the teams fighting for similar position, the Ramaz Rams. Ramaz came out on fire staking themselves to a 3-0 lead and would hold the margin heading into the third. But in the third, Yitzy Zwickler would put home two goals and with a minute left, Yehudah Weitz would do the same to tie up the game for the Thunder and send the contest to Overtime. In the extra session, JEC took a penalty and the Rams would make them pay as Jacob Smigel netted the game winner for the Rams to push their record to 4-3 at the midway point of the season.
In other varsity scores, Rambam shrugs off an early DRS goal to knock off the Wildcats 3-1. In the JV half of that contest, however, the Wildcats continue to dominate as they compile their 6th win and 4th straight shutout on the year, 5-0.
