Straight ahead on your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Yeshiva League basketball hits the hardwood of Barclays. Good Morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
This past Sunday evening featured a spectacle of historic proportions as Flatbush and HAFTR met up for the “Battle of the Birds” at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Weeks of work put into planning the event by both schools culminated in what would be the first Regular Season Yeshiva League basketball game to be played in an NBA arena. Fans were treated to a tripleheader of college action all building up to the marquee game of the night. At around 7:15 both teams took to the court for warmups, introductions an national anthems and within minutes, it was almost like any other game….almost. The action itself made for an extremely fun event and the electric atmosphere sparked by the crowd only amplified what took place. The first quarter was all Falcons, despite a slow start by both teams, and by the end of the first session, Flatbush had amassed a 9-1 lead, holding HAFTR to one lone made free throw with a tenth of a second remaining on the clock. In the second, the Falcons were able to extend their lead to double-digits at one point and looked poised to finish off HAFTR who had come into the game undefeated. The Hawks had other plans. After having been held to zero field goals over the first 13 minutes of the game, HAFTR ended the quarter off on a 6-2 run, closing the gap to a 17-10 halftime margin. In the third, HAFTR continued the march on the backs of their big-men Abie Perlow and Max Rosner, aided by Flatbush foul trouble and with 2:47 remaining in the quarter, Jonathan Greenberg put the Hawks into the lead at 23-21. But Flatbush, with nine different scorers on the night would not go away quietly. The two teams traded the lead with neither ahead by more than 2 points until the final margin. In what would be the theme of the night, HAFTR used the charity stripe to their advantage, scoring 8 points from the line in the 4th quarter, which would represent all of their points in that session. As a result, HAFTR held a 3 point lead with 36 seconds to go, with the ball in Flatbush possession. Flatbush chose to wind down the clock, however HAFTR’s three-point defense held true, denying the guards the opportunity to shoot. Flatbush was still able to move the ball around and it wound up in the hands of a wide-open Mayer Kamkhatchi behind the line for a three-point attempt that clanked off the front of the rim, sealing HAFTR’s 35-32 come-from-behind victory. Rosner and Perlow led the game with 13 and 10 points respectively for the Hawks, while Elliot Beyda posted the high for the Falcons with six.
