Thanks Nachum,
As we roll toward mid-January, we enter the near-void known as “Winter Break.” Over the next week or so, there will be minimal action due to schools not being in-session, leading to two of the most action-packed weeks to begin February. Today, on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Flatbush Varsity Basketball comes back to save their season, JEC JV Basketball plays 10 quarters in two games and DRS pulls one out with milliseconds to spare in Varsity Hockey. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Going into last week, the Boys JV Basketball league was put on notice that the JEC Thunder might just have something this season. A two-point loss to undefeated Frisch, their only blemish on the season, with two tough games against the other teams in the Western top-4, undefeated TABC and 2-loss SAR, this week . Whatever doubt people had after those two games has been completely erased, but it would take a bit extra to prove that point. Both games would go to overtime and both 1-point wins in favor of JEC. The Thunder handed the Storm their first loss of the season 47-46 on Wednesday night and followed it up with a 57-56 win over the Sting last night. Now at 7-1, and with TABC having taken a second loss to Frisch, JEC just needs one more win to wrap up a First Round Bye. In other action, HAFTR wraps up the top seed in the East with a win over Magen David, 69-58.
Speaking of other clock-stretching performances, Varsity Hockey saw a scoreless game almost go to overtime as DRS and HAFTR met this past week in a match to determine the advantage for the #1 seed in the East. Senior Jake Weinstock netted the game’s only goal in the final seconds to give DRS the 1-0 win. Senior Jakey Friedman with the shutout in the victory. DRS improves to 10-1-1 and because of HAFTR’s loss to Frisch on Sunday night, is now a win or HAFTR loss away from locking the East top-seed.
In Varsity Basketball, a thrilling finish in Flatbush saw the Falcons go from the brink of elimination, down 11 to North Shore, to controlling their own destiny. Flatbush now at 5-7, would go on a 12-0 run and pull away with solid play in the last 30 seconds of the game to earn a 55-49 win. The loss knocks the Stars down to 6-7 and instead of clinching a playoff berth will now need to hope for Flatbush losses in their two remaining games, against YDE and DRS, or North Shore will be forced to do what no one has done in Yeshiva League play this season to make the post-season, take down 11-0 Magen David.
It’s important to make the distinction that Magen David is undefeated in Yeshiva League play as the Warriors finally fell to a Yeshiva League team this past weekend at the Scott Satran Memorial Tournament in HAFTR. Magen David would lose to HANC in the quarterfinals, but the story was the home-team HAFTR Hawks, earning a bye and making it to the finals, in the midst of a 6-6 Yeshiva League Season. Unfortunately, the hosts could not pull out the big win, losing to DRS in the finals, despite erasing a double-digit deficit in the 2nd half, by the score of 60-52.
