Championship season is upon, folks, as the Nachum Segal Network prepares to kick off its exclusive coverage of the six boys and girls Basketball and Hockey championships. Today, on the JM in the AM Sports Update, we set the stage for our first week of finales, the four basketball finals. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Thursday night, the Nachum Segal Network will roll into the Torah Academy of Bergen County as our Championship series kicks off with the JV and Varsity Girls Basketball championships. The JV finals will kick off the action at around 6:15PM with the two top West seeds, SAR and Frisch. The two teams will meet for the second year in a row, as, last year, the Sting emerged victorious over the Cougars by 9. The teams split the regular season meetings, and ended up tied at 9-1, and now one game will decide it all in the Junior Varsity league.
Following the JV Championship will be the Varsity finale featuring the Frisch Cougars and the Bruriah Lighting. The Lightning advance to the finals after knocking off Ma’ayanot, 49-44, avenging an overtime loss to the Rapids in the regular season. The Cougars find their way in the finals after upsetting the undefeated, defending champion, SAR Sting, last night, 52-50, in double overtime, thanks to the steady play of Junior Leila Deluty and the clutch shooting of Junior Charlotte Turner. Like the JV competitors, these two teams split their regular season meetings and will have the score settled once and for all on Thursday night.
This coming Sunday, it’ll be the boys’ turn to take center stage as we converge on the Max Stern Athletic Center, on the Campus of Yeshiva University, for the Boys JV and Varsity Basketball championships. The action kicks off at around 1:15PM. with the JV Championships. One team has already punched their ticket to the big dance, the Eastern Conference Champion HAFTR Hawks, who knocked off the defending champion Magen David Warriors, last night, 65-55, behind 20+ point efforts from Sophomores Matthew Jedwab and Nathan Rosenberg. They will either face, the Western Conference champion, the undefeated Frisch Cougars, or the West 3 seed, the TABC Storm. The “Route-4 Rivals” will do battle tomorrow night in Frisch.
Rounding out Sunday’s action will be the Boys Varsity Basketball championship. Who will take part? We will find out over the next 48 hours, as SAR will travel to Magen David tonight and DRS will meet up in Frisch tomorrow night to determine our two championship contenders. One thing is for certain, there will be only one left standing come Sunday night, and the only way that you can find out who it is will be to tune in to the Nachum Segal Network, the exclusive home of the 2018 MYHSAL Championship games.
Next week, we’ll preview the Boys JV and Varsity Hockey championships.
Looking for more in-depth Yeshiva League playoff action? Tune in to tonight’s episode of the Court Report at 7PM on the Nachum Segal Network. This week, we run through a thrilling week of overtimes as 3 games go to extra sessions and two go even further. Plus some hockey action that will occur, with a history that tops even that. All that and more, tonight at 7PM, on the Court Report, presented by Crown Trophy of Brooklyn, only on the Nachum Segal Network, Nachumsegal.com.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
