Playoffs are in full-swing across the Yeshiva League and we already have our fair share of stunning results. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, favorites fall in JV and Varsity basketball, while favorites follow the course in Varsity Hockey. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The allure of any playoff is the prospect for potential bracket-busting upsets, and this week, JV and Varsity Basketball saw several of these outcomes occur. Last Tuesday night, the #6 seed YDE Thunder traveled to DRS to take on the #3 Wildcats, for a First-Round matchup for the second year in a row. Last year, the Thunder were able to overcome DRS for a two point win. After winning their regular season matchup this year, the Wildcats seemed determined to not let history repeat itself. However, DRS would fall behind in the early going, with YDE holding the hosts to 8 points in the first half. In the fourth quarter, it seemed as if DRS had righted the ship, cutting the Thunder lead to one point, at 25-24, but a three-pointer by sophomore, Eliyahu Cohen, sparked a 15-2 YDE run, as the Thunder prevailed over DRS for the second straight year and will now move on the face the Frisch Cougars in the quarterfinals.
Not to be outdone, Varsity Basketball saw its own “6-seed-upset-a-3-seed” moment. The TABC Storm came into the post-season on a three game win streak, taking them from the brink of elimination to the 3rd seed in the Western Conference by virtue of winning a 4-way tie. In that same tie, the Waterbury Wolfpack saw their first season in the Yeshiva League result in a fall out of a hosting spot for their first round game, all the way down to the 6th seed. The two sides met up last Thursday night and it was apparent from the outset that the Wolfpack did not take kindly to their recent demotion. Waterbury seniors, Dovid Reiser and Shlomo Deutsch, helped pace the squad to an early lead, scoring 19 and 17 respectively, and then helped hold off the Storm’s late game rally, winning 56-50. Waterbury’s win puts them in line to face the East top-seed, the undefeated Magen David Warriors, where they will look to continue their Cinderella run.
While, the playoffs can produce these Cinderella moments, sometimes it’s nice to see that the regular season results do get it right. Varsity Hockey East saw its 3- seed advance, as the Rambam Ravens dropped the HANC Hurricanes, 5-2. Two seasons ago in JV, this Ravens squad were a 1-win team, but thanks to a hat trick by Senior Benny Csillag, Rambam will move on to play the West 2nd seed, the TABC Storm, in TABC, this Thursday night.
In Girls Basketball, Bruriah’s varsity squads are enjoying success. In the Girls Varsity A league, the West 2nd seeded Lightning defeated the Flatbush Falcons 46-37. They will await the winner of East #1 Ramaz vs. West #4 Maayanot, which will take place tomorrow night. Over in Girls B, Bruriah holds the #1 seed and will play against the #4 seed Magen David Warriors. That game will take place tomorrow night as well.
