Thanks Nachum!
Good Morning everyone and happy Channukah! Straight ahead on this edition of the JM in the AM Sports Update, the last of the basketball’s undefeated stumble in a thriller, ties bring more intrigue to the final weeks of JV Hockey and Magen David pulls off an overtime stunner in Varsity Hockey. All that and more straight ahead, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
We’ll start off in varsity hockey, where the Magen David Warriors have gained a slight edge in the race for the final playoff spot in the East and it comes at the expense of the HAFTR Hawks. Two days after losing 5-2 to 3-win HANC at home, the Warriors rode 4 goals by Junior Isaac Maleh to a 4-3 Overtime win over the 4th place Hawks to gain a two-point lead over Flatbush and HANC in what is likely the final spot in the East postseason. The pressure will be on the Warriors to duplicate the feat when they travel to HAFTR. A loss would give the power back to Flatbush and HANC, who play each other twice before the end of the season. In other action, Kushner takes two from JEC, defeating them 5-1 and 1-0 over the week, Senior Josh Lando with the lone goal with under 3 minutes left in this past Sunday’s contest and TABC hands SAR its first loss 5-2.
In JV Hockey, two ties on the week ensure that separate races in the East and West will head into 2020 with tons of drama. In the West, TABC and SAR deadlocked at 3, ensuring that both teams remain without a loss. TABC is now 7-0-1 with 15 points, while SAR sits tied for 2nd with undefeated Frisch at 10 points. TABC has only undefeateds left on their schedule as DRS and Frisch remain, while SAR still has 4 games left. Out in the East, Rambam and HANC found themselves tied at 2 meaning that the last two seeds in the East will come down to three games with Flatbush, Rambam and HANC. The winner of the contest between Flatbush and HANC in February is guaranteed a spot, but the final berth will come down to Rambam and YDE also happening that same night.
Over in JV Basketball, the final undefeated hardwood team fell Wednesday night as MTA knocked off TABC 47-44. TABC was 7-0 coming into the matchup, MTA 4-1. Now, TABC, Frisch, SAR and MTA all sit with one loss. All are basically assured of a playoff spot. The question as we hit the last 2 or three games of the year for the teams, is who will stand up and whether there is still enough room for a team like Ramaz at 4-2 to jump into the conversation. In other action, Hillel jumps to 6-3, clinching a playoff spot with a 60-48 win over JEC and HANC pulls above .500 with a 36-27 win over Shaare Torah.
Finally, in Varsity Basketball, the Magen David Warriors become the first team to hit double-digits as they earn their 10th win on the season, a 65-53 win over YDE. Senior Albert Nsiri led the game with 17 in the win. Hillel will look to join them this week as they face Kushner on Monday night. The Heat earned win #9 on Thursday night, knocking off JEC 56-44 behind 27 from Senior Zack Cytryn. In other action Ramaz, Waterbury and MTA all pick up wins as 5th through 8th place in the West all sit within one game of each other.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
