Thanks Nachum!
On this edition of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the temperature may be dropping outside, but in Varsity Basketball, you just can’t beat the Heat. That and much much more straight ahead! Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The Hillel Varsity Basketball Heat continue their hot start taking two wins this past week. The Magen David Pre-season finalists and Memphis Cooper Tournament semifinalists are undefeated so far, improving to 3-0 on the early season. Seniors Zack Cytryn and Joe Zekaria broke the 20-points mark against SAR, this past week, scoring 22 and 21 respectively in a 69-57 win. The Heat would take win #3 this past Sunday, knocking off HANC 49-36. In other Heat news, the defending champion Heschel Heat traveled to Frisch last night and knocked off the nation’s #1 ranked Cougars 68-64 in Overtime. Both teams came into the contest undefeated, with the loss now knocking Frisch down to 2-1. Over in the East, HAFTR earns a split on the week, knocking off North Shore by 20 after falling to Magen David.
In Boys JV Basketball, the top of the East, going into last night’s games was an all-Brooklyn affair, with Magen David, Flatbush and YDE a combined 8-0. That is no longer the case as the Warriors fell to DRS 52-42. Prior to last night, Magen David was at 3-0 after defeating HAFTR on Wednesday night, while YDE knocked off HANC 40-36 to remain perfect at 2-0, along with Flatbush at 2-0. Shaare Torah looked to put a dent into Flatbush’s record last night when the two met up. Out West, Frisch opened up its season with a dominating win over Kushner and the Idea School picked up its first Yeshiva League win, dropping Westchester 36-30.
In our first look at Girls Varsity Basketball this year, the HAFTR Hawks have jumped out ahead of the league with a 4-0 record in the East going into last night’s contest with North Shore. HAFTR seems to have found a magical number, 51, as 3 of its 4 victories have seen the Hawks score 51 points, including Saturday night’s 51-27 win over HANC. Out West, the usual trio of Frisch, SAR and Maayanot are all 3-0, but with 6 games ahead for the 3, the race to the top of the division should make for an entertaining winter.
Moving over to hockey, where the SAR Sting remain perfect, but not without a scare. The TABC Storm held a 5-3 lead 3 minutes into the 3rd period but the Sting would score 3 straight, with the game winner coming from Senior Yamin Semer with 13 seconds left in the contest. The win puts SAR at 4-0 as it prepares itself for a contest with Kushner later on this week. The Cobras came up short again in their home and home contest with Frisch, losing 3-2 in the rink in Kushner, but the close contests with the consensus top team in the league are definitely encouraging to the Cobra season prospects. In other news, Rambam rebounds from getting shutout against DRS, 4-0 with a 2-1 win over HAFTR to move to 4-1. Senior Zeke Rothbert notched the game-winner in that contest.
Finally, in Boys JV Hockey, JEC notches their first win on the season, upending Ramaz in overtime 4-3 and Flatbush becomes the first team to go over the halfway mark of the season, albeit in a losing effort, falling 7-1 to Kushner with their record now at 3-3 on the year.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
