Three more championships bring to a close the boys JV Basketball, and JV and Varsity Hockey Leagues. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we roll through these finals and give you the rundown on all the action from this past weekend’s 2018 Red Sarachek Memorial Tournament. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Last Wednesday night, the JV Basketball Championship was decided as the West #3 seed, TABC Storm, took home their first ever basketball championship, defeating the HAFTR Hawks, 58-50. The Hawks held a 15-8 lead mid-way through the second quarter before TABC went on a 16-3 run to finish out the half and the Storm would not trail again. Sophomore Yoni Mann scored 21 points, 17 in the 2nd half to lead the Storm in the victory. HAFTR was led in the loss by Sophomores, Matthew Jedwab and Ethan Oliner, both reaching double digits.
This past Sunday, the Nachum Segal Network presented its exclusive broadcast of the MYHSAL JV and Varsity Hockey Championships. The audience at Lawrence Middle School and watching online, were treated to two phenomenal contests starting with the JV Championships between the TABC Storm and the Frisch Cougars. Scoreless through two periods of play, the game’s lone goal would come in 3 on 3 play with eight minutes left in the third, off a great move by TABC Freshman Zach Levy. Sophomore Charles Gibber would keep a lid on the Storm net, as TABC avenged last year’s championship loss, with a 1-0 victory.
In the second game of the afternoon, the varsity participants took center stage as the Frisch Cougars and SAR Sting met up to crown the season’s final boys champion. A one-goal game heading into the third period, with SAR leading 2-1, a bevy of penalties allowed the Sting to extend the lead when Senior Gordie Kolb added a natural hat-trick in a two and a half minute stretch, to the two goals scored in the second period, to account for all five Sting points on the afternoon. Kolb’s heroics would earn him MVP honors as SAR would add its first Varsity Championship to the JV Championship that this year’s seniors won as freshmen.
Boys Varsity Basketball would wrap up its season with the 2018 Red Saracheck Memorial Tournament at Yeshiva University. Twenty teams, including seven from the Yeshiva League, battled through four days of games, with four finals rounding out Championship Monday. TABC and MTA were the only two teams to walk away with championship hardware, from the Yeshiva League, winning the Tier II and Tier III tournaments, respectively. In the Tier I final, Shalhevet defeated Valley Torah 53-51, behind 28 points from Zack Muller.
Finally, congratulations, once again to my YCQ Wildcats, on winning the New York Junior High Hockey League Championship, this past Thursday night.
