Thank you Nachum,
We are now officially two days removed from the JV and Varsity basketball championships, effectively drawing to a close the final chapter of the 2016-2017 Winter sport season. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up winter and move on to spring. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
This past Sunday, the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University played host to the 2016-2017 Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball Championships. Both games, brought to you right here on the Nachum Segal Network, presented by Manischewitz, featured teams with storied basketball histories and those looking to write their first entries on their ledgers.
The day kicked off with the Junior Varsity championship with the Eastern Division Champion Magen David Warriors and the Western Division Champion TABC Storm. Magen David came in looking for their first championship since 2011, while for the Storm, this represented the first championship basketball game in the school’s 23 year history. Magen David held a 35-18 lead at the half behind 14 first-half points by Sophomore Michael Natkin, but foul trouble and timely play by Sophomores Jonathan Haberman and Alex Ostrin brought TABC all the way back to within 4 with 2:33 left. But TABC would have no answer for the Warriors transition game as Magen David would break the press and capitalize, pushing the lead back to 11 with under a minute to go, leading to the 60-52 final score in favor of the Warriors. Natkin would lead Magen David with 16 points, earning game MVP honors. Haberman would lead the game with 21 points in the loss for the Storm. Congratulations to Coach Sol Dweck and Magen David on the win.
For the marquee matchup, the West’s top 2 seeds, the Heschel Heat and the Frisch Cougars met up for the third time this season. Each won their respective home games and would take to a neutral court to decide the series. Frisch jumped out early behind 8 1st-quarter points from Senior Sammy Fishman and 9 2nd-quarter points by Senior Yisroel Solomon and paced the Cougars to a 28-20 lead at the half. Frisch would score the first 7 points of the second half to open a 15-point margin, but Heschel would not go away, outscoring Frisch 16-4 the rest of the quarter to make it a 3-point game with 8 minutes to go. The game would remain close throughout most of the 4th with Frisch never losing the lead. With under a minute to go, Senior Isaac Laifer would hit 3 key free-throws and Fishman would punctuate a 9 point stanza with a lay in and a foul shot of his own to ice the game away with the final score 53-45 in favor of the Cougars. Fishman would lead the game with 23 points and earning MVP honors and Frisch its 7th MYHSAL Varsity basketball title. Jeremy Speira paced Heschel in the loss with 17 points. Congratulations to Coaches Joe Schwartz and Eli Davidoff and Frisch on the victory.
