Thanks Nachum. This week’s JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated to my father Marty, whose ninth Yehartzeit will be commemorated tomorrow night.
Well dear listeners, the Yeshiva League season has reached its inevitable conclusion. On this edition of the JM in the AM Sports Update, we’ll recap the round-ball finales that took place this past weekend. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
This past Sunday, the JV and Varsity Basketball championships were held at Yeshiva University with two extremely similar games. The Junior Varsity game between Frisch and SAR kicked off the day’s action with both teams hitting shots left and right, ending the first quarter with an NBA-caliber score of 24-21 Frisch. The scoring would slow down just a little bit, but Frisch would maintain a 4-point margin going into the half on the play of Yisroel Solomon and Sammy Fishman’s 12 points apiece. For SAR, the first half was a one-man show with Daniel Wisotsky putting in half of the team’s points, 18, in the first 16 minutes. In the second half, Frisch’s offense would break open a 10 point lead, and would have been worse if not for SAR big-man Dovie Marcus heating up with 9 points on the stanza. In the 4th, the Sting would buzz back and would take a one-point lead with 1:57 to go. The teams would trade points on possessions and with 19 seconds left, the score would be knotted at 63 with Frisch in possession. Frisch point guard Isaac Laifer kept the ball himself, drove the lane, was fouled and would hit the 2nd of two foul shots and with 1.5 seconds to go, there was no time for SAR to do anything but heave up a prayer which went unanswered as Frisch bought home their 2nd JV Championship in the last 3 years.
In the Varsity showdown, the greatest rivalry in Yeshiva League Sports took center-stage for the second straight week with DRS and HAFTR doing battle. HAFTR jumped out to a 10-1 lead thanks to hot shooting by Michael Weissman and Sammy Mandel, who would be the team’s leading scorers on the night. DRS would fight to keep pace and was on the low end of a 15-7 score at the end of 1. In the second, more Hawk domination. HAFTR outscored DRS 14-10 on the quarter with just 3 Wildcat players registering baskets in the frame. The good news for DRS, star Gabriel Leifer got on the board with 5, a prelude to a monstrous second half. The bad news, the 12-point deficit would not be as bad as it would get. An 8-1 HAFTR run to start the 3rd would put the Wildcats down 19 until Leifer dropped 9 as part of a 12-0 DRS run that ended with 5 seconds to go in the quarter when Weissman drained a clutch 3 to push HAFTR’s lead back out to 10. In the 4th quarter, Leifer’s tear would continue. The junior would score 8 in the quarter, none bigger than the banker off the glass with 34 seconds to go to cut the score to 47-45 HAFTR. An Abie Perlow free throw would push the score back out to 3 and DRS would have one final opportunity to tie. As expected, the ball wound up in Leifer’s hands, but only momentarily as HAFTR’s Jonathan Greenberg stripped him with 9 seconds to go and was fouled. Two foul shots later, and the deal was sealed, with HAFTR winning 50-45, becoming the first school to win both the Varsity hockey and basketball championships since the school did it, itself, back in 2002.
Just because the Yeshiva League Season is over, though, does not mean that basketball is done. This Thursday, the 2015 Red Sarachek tournament will begin. Check out Macslive.com, the official website of the tournament for the schedule and all of the details!
