Thank you Nachum!
Good Morning everyone. I know that today is Wednesday and not our usual Tuesday morning, but for those of us who know how the Varsity Hockey championships ended this past Sunday, even you need to admit that you needed at least one extra day to recover. We’ll get to that, the JV Championships and some news on basketball’s “Granddaddy of em all” the 2014 Red Sarachek tournament. All that, straight ahead on this Wednesday edition of the JM in the AM Sports Update. Hello everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
For the Standing Room Only crowd that showed up to watch the Varsity championship in Lawrence Middle School on Sunday afternoon, the game that they came to see ended up being worth way more than the price of admission. Two heated Long Island rivals, Division Champion DRS Wildcats and the second seeded HAFTR Hawks met for the third time this year, and this time it was for keeps. Unlike in the first two games, DRS was held off the scoreboard early as HAFTR controlled play throughout the first period. But much like the other two games, DRS was the first to strike when, only 57 seconds into the second period, Wildcat Leo Rubin spun out of the corner and sent a shot to the net that trickled in under HAFTR goalie Joe Kestenbaum’s pads. DRS picked up the momentum and looked primed to capture their third championship in the last 5 years, but with all of the offense that HAFTR exhibited all year, you had a feeling that they’d find a way to put at least one home and midway through the third, they did just that. The Baratz-Schreiber connection found another way onto the scoreboard when senior Adam Schreiber set up fellow senior Ari Baratz with a pass at the free throw line, which Baratz rifled past DRS goalie Ari Gutenmacher to tie the game at one. From there on out it was a dogfight as each team tried frantically to put home the go-ahead goal before the end of regulation. However, neither could capitalize and to Overtime we would go. In the extra session, HAFTR came out firing, peppering the DRS net with 4 shots on goal in the first minute and a half alone. Gutenmacher would keep them out, but 3:22 into the extra session, Schreiber and Baratz would do it again as Schreiber came around from behind the net and sent a pass to the middle to Baratz who slammed it home for the Championship winner, giving HAFTR its first varsity championship since 2009. Baratz would receive MVP honors for his two goals in the victory.
In the matinee session, Division champions TABC and Rambam took center stage on the LMS floor with the chance of a history-tying day looming for the Storm faithful in the JV Championship. TABC, winners of the last 5 JV championship games came into the day only one win away from tying the record for most consecutive championships in any sport. From the outset, TABC’s top line proved too much for Rambam to deal with and the Storm pounced on goals by sophomores Ari Fuchs and Yair Knoller, in the last minute of the first and the opening seconds of the second period, respectively. Freshman Daniel Yizhaky would cut the deficit in half with a beautiful goal, redirecting a perfect pass by Daniel Kurman, putting the Ravens on the board. But a Rambam penalty late in the second period would prove costly. Starting out the third on the powerplay, the Storm capitalized on the man advantage when Fuchs put home his second of the afternoon. The Ravens would bounce back on a powerplay goal of their own by Freshman Daniel Lichter, but they would get no closer. Sophomores Calev Minsky and Jonah Ganchrow would add insurance goals late, as the Storm rolled to a 5-2 victory and a 6th consecutive championship. Fuchs was named MVP for his contributions to the Storm win.
Congratulations, again, to HAFTR and TABC. For more in depth coverage, you can log on the Court Report page on NachumSegal.com and access the full episode of Sunday night’s show or you can find it on the NSN App on your IPOD or the podcast section on Itunes.
