Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, buzzer beaters are the theme of the week along with near dominance by one powerhouse school as JV and Varsity hockey crown its victors and JV and Varsity Basketball get ready for their finale this coming Sunday. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
JV and Varsity Hockey took center stage this past Sunday with two thrilling championships, both decided in the waning moments. The JV championship started off the day as DRS and TABC squared off with HAFTR playing host for the early festivities. The Wildcats, victors in their regular season meeting would draw first blood and take a 2-0 lead, but TABC would erase the deficit with two goals under a minute and the score would remain deadlocked late into the third. Overtime looked to be on the horizon as the teams lined up for a face-off in the TABC zone with 3 seconds to go, but in an instant, Eitan Rogoff turned the tide, slamming home an Ethan Lieber faceoff win for the buzzerbeater goal and DRS’s 6th championship victory. The DRS faithful would then make their way over to North Shore for a battle of the top 2 Eastern schools, DRS and HANC in the Varsity championships. DRS, the defending champions and HANC in their first hockey final in school history. The Hurricanes jumped on the board mid-way through the first as three seconds into a powerplay, HANC’s super-scorer Eliya Yizhaky sniped one into the DRS net. HANC would carry the lead through the second period, but 90 seconds into the third, DRS’ Yitzy Yudin got a stick on a bouncer in front of the net that made its way over the goalie and into the goal to tie the game at 1. Much like the JV game, the course of play looked very much like there would be extra sessions to decide the winner, but with just under a minute and a half to go, DRS’ Max Pockriss took a pass wide open in the slot and drilled the game winner into the net, sweeping the day for the DRS faithful and giving the Wildcats back to back championships.
If locking down 2 championships isn’t enough for DRS, they’ll have the chance to capture yet another one on Sunday evening when the varsity basketball ‘Cats battle for the crown after holding off defending champion Magen David in a thrilling two-point win 60-58 in the Greenhouse Saturday night. Josh Chabbott’s 26, not enough for the Warriors, as Joe Aaron’s 23rd and 24th points broke the tie with under 10 seconds to go, pacing the East top seed DRS who will now advance to play West top seed TABC. The Storm took a 46-35 victory over North Shore behind 16 points from Akiva Borrgen to set the stage for a matchup usually reserved for the hockey court now taking center court at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University.
While a clean sweep would have been an extraordinary feat for the Wildcats, not all last second shots fell in their direction this past week. The JV Basketball Wildcats and the Ramaz Rams would go to double overtime where DRS held a 1 point lead over Ramaz with under 5 seconds to go, when Ramaz’s Noah Hiltzik was fouled while taking a desperation three-pointer. Hiltzik would miss the first shot, but nail the next two giving the West top seed Rams the 62-61 win, spoiling a 41 point performance from DRS’s Elisha Tsaidi. The Rams return to YU after a one-year hiatus having appeared in a losing effort two years ago. They will square up with the East top seed Flatbush Falcons who survived a thrilling battle by Frisch 47-44. The JV Falcons have spent quite a while away from the Max Stern Athletic Center but will look to make the most of it as they ride a 10-game winning streak into the finals, this coming Sunday.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
