Indoor sports are semifinal ready and outdoor sports are winding down leading into the shavuos break. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, top seeds advance in Girls Varsity Soccer, but not in Boys Varsity Soccer, two shutouts highlight the girls hockey quarterfinals and a newcomer find themselves hot in the playoff mix in boys varsity softball. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start out in soccer, where, in Boys Varsity, a trio of quarterfinal contests took place Wednesday completing the round of play. The 4-5 contest lived up to the billing, going to sudden death, where Frisch outlasted host HANC 6-5 to advance to meet top seed SAR. The other half of the bracket saw West Champion TABC trounce DRS 11-3, and saw a major upset avoided as North Shore outlasted Ramaz 5-4. Both Semifinal contests, in SAR and TABC will take place tonight.
In Girls Varsity, the last two semifinal spots were filled, with the two higher seeds moving on with lucky 13 spots on the scoreboard. Kushner defeated Heschel 13-5 and SAR outpointed North Shore 13-11 to advance. SAR will next meet up with East Champion SKA tonight on Long Island, with the winner awaiting the winner of tomorrow night’s contest between Kushner and Frisch in Frisch.
In Girls Hockey, the semifinals are all queued up after two first round shutouts. Home teams SAR and Kushner each advanced following shutouts over Ramaz and Heschel, respectively. Heschel and Kushner were scoreless for over 30 minutes before the Cobras struck for 3 goals in the final minutes for their 3-0 victory to advance to play top seed Frisch. SAR blanked the 6 seed Rams 4-0 and will take on East Champion HAFTR. Both contests will take place tomorrow night.
Heading out onto the diamond, a big week in the Central as Zichron Paltiel knocked off Magen Abraham twice to jump to 5-2 and catapult into the playoff picture. The wins kick wide open a door left open by Magen David’s 12-9 loss to Shaare Torah, handing the Warriors their 2nd loss in a row and third on the year. Zichron Paltiel can lock up the post-season spot when they take on Flatbush tomorrow night. However, should Flatbush prevail, the two teams and Magen David will all be tied at 5-3 with at most two, and depending on Maor’s matchup with SAR tomorrow night, only 1 of the three may find their way into the knockout stages.
The 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place Sunday June 11th in HAFTR. As usual, the 8-team event will be a fundraiser for Hatzolah, with our acclaimed memorabilia raffle, this year highlighted by our top prize, an autographed Adam Fox All-Star Game Jersey. Tickets for that and the rest of our amazing prizes will be available on our website over the next few days.
