Thanks Nachum,
With the Thanksgiving holiday behind us, we are rapidly closing in on the half-way mark of the 2017-2018 sports season. Although the week was short, it sure did have its fair share of impact games. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, SAR and Frisch meet up again for a hockey double header, JEC JV hockey keeps above .500 and a big week for one Cobra as Kushner basketball rolls to 2 wins. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Last night, the Hive in Riverdale played host to 4 games between the Frisch Cougars and the host SAR Sting. While the girls were off playing two volleyball games, the boys JV and Varsity squads met up in the rink. The JV game kicked off the action first where both teams came into the night undefeated, with SAR at 3-0 and Frisch only at 1-0. So at the end of the night, only one would remain undefeated. Last year when the two teams met in the rink, they would end up tied 3-3, a pivotal game on Frisch’s road to the championship. This year, the Cougars would not be content with only walking away with 1 point. Frisch would put home 2 goals within 30 seconds, halfway through the first, into a 3-0 lead at the end of 1 and turn it into a 6-0 rout, keeping Frisch perfect on the year. The Cougars will put their undefeated record on the line again this coming Motzai Shabbos in a new budding rivalry when they host DRS.
On the varsity end, this game would be the return battle from the 7-3 drubbing that SAR put on Frisch in Frisch a few weeks ago. Take you back to last year where the two teams split on the other’s home courts, so the Cougars had to have some extra motivation heading in. However, whatever momentum they had quickly evaporated as the Sting scored 3 goals in the first 6 minutes of the game and never allowed Frisch to get started until the very end, as SAR swept the season series with a 5-1 win. Both teams will have a quick turnaround now, as SAR will face DRS in a semifinal rematch in DRS on Thursday night and Frisch will host the Wildcats in a Varsity Championship rematch following the JV contest on Saturday night. Frisch would come away happy, however, as they would go 3-1 overall on the night, sweeping the JV and Varsity girls Volleyball contests.
In other JV Hockey action, JEC withstood an MTA comeback to defeat the Lions 3-2 in Overtime behind two goals from Sophomore Dovid Rozezadeh. JEC moves to 3-1, while MTA is quickly dropping out of the playoff conversation at 2-3-1-1.
The Kushner Cobras varsity basketball squad enjoyed their Thanksgiving week, although one player might have had more fun than the rest. Kushner took two games last week, first defeating Hillel 62-50 in the massive 6-contest night that Kushner hosted last week. The Cobras would follow it up with a narrow 42-40 win over MTA this past Saturday night. In both contests, the star of the game was Cobra Junior Gabe Plotzker. Plotzker went off on Hillel, narrowly missing a triple-double posting 23 points, 14 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. He would follow it up with a “modest” night against the Lions, only posting 15 points and 10 boards, for his 4th double-double in 5 games this season. Kushner now stands at 3-2.
