Thanks Nachum!
Happy 6/13 everyone! Straight ahead on the penultimate Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of the 2016-2017 season, Boys Softball Cardiac Kids finish a perfect season, a Rapid repeat in Girls Softball, and an 8 seed in Soccer finishes #1. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start out on the baseball diamond where the Varsity Softball championship was played this past Sunday between Hillel and YDE. Last week we mentioned Hillel avenging last year’s loss to Frisch to punch their ticket, and over the week YDE earned theirs dropping MAY for the second consecutive year, 11-8. Much like in several of its games this year, the undefeated Heat found themselves down early when Senior Eliezer Benlulu plated Senior Joey Yedid in the 2nd to give YDE the 1-0 lead, but Hillel would bounce back in the bottom of the 5th with a hit by Junior Noah Maze that brought in 2 to give the Heat a slim lead. Junior Michael Ancona would make the lead stand up on the mound, retiring the last 6 batters to give the Heat their 2nd varsity championship in the last 5 years and their 5th varsity championship all-time.
In other diamond dealings, the “higher-seeds” pulled through in JV Softball as 4th seeded YDE defeated 8th seeded DRS and 5th seeded HAFTR downed 6th seeded Frisch to set up a finals showdown. In Girls Softball the Maayanot Rapids repeat as champions, defeating SAR, 1-0, this past Sunday, avenging two earlier 1-run losses to the Sting this year. And in Boys Baseball, Kushner advances to the Boys Baseball final, downing Flatbush. They will now await the winner of the Frisch-TABC Semifinal tomorrow night.
Speaking of Kushner, the boys varsity Soccer Cobras completed their “Cinderella run” this past Sunday night, knocking out the defending champion HANC Hurricanes 8-4. The Cobras, the 8th seed, scored early and often with two quick strikes coming from an unlikely source, their goalkeeper Senior Eli Slonim. Kushner would amass a 5-1 lead and hold a 4- goal advantage throughout the rest of the game rounding out a playoff where they upended the 1, 2 and 4 seeds on the road to the crown. Junior Max Kops and Senior Marc Yarkony each added two in the win, Seniors Jonathan Malek and Zack Israeli rounded out the rest of the Cobra offense. The win avenges a loss at the hands of the Hurricanes in last year’s semifinal.
Up ahead this week, the last three finals of the school year, with the aforementioned JV Softball and Varsity Baseball final and tomorrow night’s Girls Hockey championship between Kushner and Maayanot, all leading up to next week’s final Sports Update of the 2016-2017 season.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
