Yeshiva League Sports (YLS) with Elliot Weiselberg has returned to JM in the AM! Yoni Pollak presented Elliot on this morning’s program to deliver the latest Yeshiva League hockey and basketball information. Good morning everyone!

It’s the Tuesday morning following the MYJHHL and the MYHSAL JV and Varsity Championship games and surprisingly, I still have my voice. After spending 7 straight hours on the airwaves, one would think a recharge is in order, but no rest for the weary as it is time to bring you yet another Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update. Today, we recap all of the action from this past Sunday and set the stage on what’s to come this coming Sunday at Yeshiva University. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.

This past Sunday, the yeshiva hockey world turned its eyes to the grandest stage of them all, Lawrence Middle School for the JV and Varsity Championship hockey games and the Nachum Segal Network was right along for the ride. Our special presentation, sponsored by Manischewitz took you through 7 hours of action which included the New York Junior High Championships where North Shore defeated HAFTR for its first championship and followed up with the High School games.

In the JV Championship, the “Route-4 Rivalry” traveled out to Lawrence, as the TABC Storm and Frisch Cougars squared off for the first time in a winter Championship. Frisch jumped out to a lead in the 2nd on a goal by Freshman Elliot Eisner and would see Sophomore J.J. Coren add another late in the 3rd period for the Cougars. TABC would have no answer to Frisch’s stifling defense and sharp play by Frisch goalie Isaac Markovitz as the Cougars upended the Storm in their third attempt this season, but the one that counted most, by the score of 2-0. Markovitz was awarded game MVP, finishing off the season with a shutout of the league’s top team. Congratulations to Frisch on their first JV Championship and their first boys hockey championship since 2005.

The Cougars would then look to tackle the task done only 4 times prior in league history, that being a sweep of the JV and Varsity finals. In the Varsity contest, the West top seed, the Frisch Cougars would take on the East top seed, the undefeated DRS Wildcats. DRS would open the scoring late in the first when Senior Shlomo Mansbach would tap in a rebound on the side of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Frisch would even the score half-way through the second on a laser by Senior Yehuda Brinn and we would go to the third period tied at one. But with just over 6 and a half minutes to go, the game would turn as Junior Daniel Soffer would slam home a rebound in front of the Frisch net to give DRS a lead that it would not let slip. Mansbach would add a second tally 3 minutes later and Junior goalie phenom MVP Jakey Friedman would shut the door the rest of the way, giving DRS a 3-1 win and its first Varsity Championship since 2012. For the junior class, this is the 2nd straight year that they’ve defeated Frisch in a championship, winning last year in the JV Championship by the same score.

With hockey finished, our attention now turns to basketball, where this Sunday at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University, the JV and Varsity Basketball championships will take place. At 1:30PM, the top teams of the East and West, the Magen David Warriors and the TABC Storm will square off. Both teams finished the season with a record of 9-1. In the varsity contest, an all-West affair, as the Heschel Heat and the Frisch Cougars do battle. The teams split their regular season meetings and this will be the rubber match with the most on the line.
