Yeshiva League Sports (YLS) with Elliot Weiselberg has returned to JM in the AM! Nachum presented Elliot on this morning’s program to deliver the latest Yeshiva League hockey and basketball information. Well it was bound to happen at some point this season. Snow wipes out a major slate on Saturday night, disrupting the Yeshiva League run to the playoffs in all sports. But, before that happened, a full week of games did occur and we’re ready to bring all of that to you. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM Iin the AM Sports Update, Kushner hockey clings to playoff hopes in both JV and Varsity hockey against JEC, Gideon Vilinski continues his hot hand for DRS Varsity Basketball and HAFTR continues its climb in JV. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.

Raise your hands if you thought that DRS, with its entire contributing cast from last year’s varsity basketball championship having graduated, would be in the hunt at the top of the Yeshiva League. That’s what I thought. Yet, here we stand on January 10th with the Wildcats holding a 9-3 record, a loss behind division leading Rambam at the top of Eastern Conference. The Wildcats took command of second place this week, handing YDE their second loss of the season by the score of 70-56. The Wildcats were once again led by Junior phenom, Gideon Vilinski, who after throwing down 39 against Flatbush only a few weeks ago, nearly matched the feat, scoring 38 on the Thunder. This marks the 3rd time in the last 5 games that Vilinski has topped the 30 point mark. In other action, Rambam dropped HAFTR 44-27, the Ravens holding the Hawks to only 4 points in the entire second half, and HANC took two wins to guarantee at least a .500 mark on the year.

HAFTR’s JV Basketball team is trending in the upward direction after taking two on the week to push its current winning streak to 6 games and its record to 7-2, tied for the division lead. The Hawks defeated Flatbush and Rambam, clinching a playoff berth, turning its record around after close losses to Magen David and DRS to begin the year. Should HAFTR win its final game of the year against North Shore and DRS lose its final game against Flatbush, the Hawks will earn themselves the #1 seed in the East in the upcoming playoffs.

Speaking of playoffs, both Kushner JV and Varsity Hockey teams are barely hanging on to their playoff hopes, but certainly improved their odds, taking a sweep of JEC this past week. The Varsity team struck first, taking a 2-0 win on goals by Seniors Aaron Strook and Jonathan Malek to put them 4 points behind MTA for the 6th spot in the West. In JV, the teams traded goals before Freshman Josh Lando broke a 2-2 tie for the Cobras to keep Kushner in contention as the race toward the playoffs draws to a close. Sophomore Jordan Sherris tallied Kushner’s other 2 goals in the win. Both teams can now only help themselves in the stretch run. In other action, Frisch varsity completes the sweep of TABC with a 4-2 win, while the JV teams wind up in a 2-2 draw as TABC still maintains the edge in the race for the top seed in the West.
